1 A Demonstration of the Utility of SAS in Creating Examples to Aid in the Teaching of Statistical Concepts Earnest Davenport The use of SAS for statistical analysis and data management is well established. The current paper makes use of SAS in a different context. Here SAS is used to create examples to aid the teaching of statistical concepts. Due to time and space limitations the teaching of only one concept is illustrated; the Central Limit Theorem (CLT). Several side issues are also addressed as they relate to the example developed below. Note that concepts other than the CLT can also be modeled to allow instructors to develop material for teaching a wide range of statistical concepts such as: analysis of variance, regression analysis, factor analysis, reliability, validity, hypothesis testing, critical values, etc. sample, standard deviation, sample size, proc freq 9

3 Classroom Presentation Techniques L. Jean Ussery The assignment of teaching others is both challenging and exciting. There are a number of subtle factors involved in presenting information that can significantly affect your success as an instructor. Obviously. students must pay attention during instruction in order to retain the information presented. The following proven techniques for establishing rapport, observing and interpreting students' reactions, using classroom aids, handling difficult students, dealing with various personalities, and fielding questions give you the tools you need to meet any teaching challenge. Whether you teach in a classroom environment or on a one-to-one basis, the tips offered here will help you teach effectively and help your trainees assimilate your information readily. The art of teaching is not easy, but with practice and self-evaluation, you can develop your communication and presentation skills so that your students not only learn from you, but enjoy the experience and rate you a top instructor input statement, options statement 16
