P. Blood
C.M. Fenton, P. Blood Upjohn Ltd, UK This paper considers the use of a partially balanced incomplete block (PBIB) design for a statistical analysis of a microbiological assay for antibiotics. The design uses an 8 x 8 plate array laid out as 16 blocks of size 4 instead of the usual column and row arrangement. Four standard and twelve test solutions are then laid out in a semi-regular manner on the plate. The method uses two programs, the first of which calls PROC GLM twice, firstly to adjust for a block effect and secondly to adjust for a treatment effect. CONTRAST and ESTIMATE statements are then used to determine the regression equation needed for the standard samples. The LSMEANS statement is used for the remaining test samples. The second program uses Fieller's equation to convert the mean test results into dose values with the aid of an inverted regression equation; it also adds confidence intervals on the independent variable, dose sample, proc step, proc glm, proc genmod, proc calis, regression analysis, macro variable, confidence interval, estimate, treatment effect, predictor variable, %if-%then-%else source 12

5 A SAS Disk - Space Monitor Which Predicts Data Base Growth Brent Turner A SAS disk-space monitoring system has been implemented loJhieh applies kno\o,ledge-based rules to historical, space-usage data for IMS data bases. The growth patterns, of these data bases are projected from analyses of this information. These projections are used to establish when the data bases will exceed their individual space allocations, and also· when the disk space on their respective volumes will be exhausted. Exception flags signal the presence of these and other conditions which can present problems for data base administration. These fla!;!s re-fer to problem descriptions I"hich assist in correcting such conditions. cOI'I'ection methods include reorganizing data bases and specifying candidate v.olumes for data set expansion .By analyzing data base growth, the space monitor serves as a management decision support system to indicate when the acqOisition of both additional and newer devices is justified macro definition, dataset source 11
6 A SAS Procedure For Evaluating Growth In Pediatric Patients F. Schafer Evaluation of growth in pediatric patients, represents a conunon problem for the pediatrician. It is of great importance to relate the actual height of a patient to the mean height achieved by a standard population of equal age.In case of a Gaussian distribution, this can be expressed as a standard deviation score (SOS), Le. (xi - xSt)/SOSt (xi: individuai value; X St : age-interpol ated mean value of standard;SOSt: standard deviation of mean standard value). In conunon practice, these SOS are evaluated interactively. This, however, may become a tiresome procedure if a considerable number of patient data or of pati'ents are to be analysed. Therefore, we have ,written a sAs procedure for the batch eval-uation of SOS for a variable number of datapoints per patient and a variable number of patients at the same time. In addition, different tables of standard values may be used for groups of patients of variable ethnic origin standard deviation, data step source 10
7 A SAS Procedure For Evaluating Inulin Clearance Data Norbert Gretz In clinical nephrology it is of considerable importance to determine renal function as correctly as possible. For that purpose, however, there are only a few methods available. One of which is the so-called single shot inulin clearance. Up to now, this method has been too tiresome to be applied routinely. Since the arrival of a new test kit for inulin, this clearance technique is more widely used. Now the more tiresome part is the calculation of the clearance itself. For that purpose we have written a SAS procedure based on a two compartment model. We describe two approaches to the problem: one with and one without using SAS Graph regression analysis, auc, raw data, data step, sample, proc step source 10
8 A SAS/IML Program For Generalised Procrustes Analysis Pascal Schlich GPA is a fairly known mUltivariate statistical method. GENSTAT software includes a GPA macro, but SAS does not. The aim of this communication is to announce a GPA program written in SAS/IML. GPA is a three-way data analysis : variables have been recorded on the same n sam ples in k different situations. Each situation defines a configuration of n points in a multidimensional space. Purpose of GPA is to match the k configurations to a common consensus configuration, by translation, scale change and iterative rotation/reflec tion. When transformed configurations are as close as possible, their mean defines the cqnsensus. Output of the program allows interpre"tation in several ways. Prccrustes statis tics quantify agreement of each configuration or sample with the consensus. Grar lical representations of the consensus are obtained by principal component analysis. Samples separation on principal plot is explained by correlations between the principal compo nents and all of the variables sample, proc princomp, correlation, anova source 9
9 An Application Using SAS/QC Software At Alcoa Laboratories Linda W. Blazek The use of designed experiments and quality control techniques has increased dramatically in recent years throughout American industry including the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa). With this comes increasing demands on statisticians to plan project strategies in these areas. Effective and concise communications with managers, scientists, engineers, and technicians are essential. This paper describes one project at Alcoa Laboratories and how SAS software is used to help statisticians fulfill the various aspects of their job's requirements proc step, sample, main effect, standard deviation, proc genmod source 18
10 An Information System For All SAS Users Paul Czembor The SAS system has been used at the European Economic Community since about 1984 under CMS and is currently running on PC's also. Support and training for the whole of the EEC (be that in Luxembourg, Brussels or Geneva) is given from Luxembourg. As not all users have access to the full set of SAS'" documentation, or do not know where to find the infor mation, they may not be using SAS to their full advantage. 12 An Overview Of MVA The SAS Institute Philosophy Of Hosting Philip J. Winters Version 6 of the SAS System has heen success fully hosted on a wide variety of architectures. In order to accomplish this feat, SAS Institute has es tablished a general philosophy of development along with some specific guidelines to ease certain prob lems that have occured during the development ef fort. This paper describes the basic approach taken in this effort. Specific topics to be addressed include limitations of C compilers and the C language, ex ploiting machine features, multi-machine product configuration, and a general overview of the sys tem layering. Special emphasis is given to how the SAS System avoids a 'least common denominator' error message, by group processing source 6

15 Application Development With SAS Software On The PC Computer Aided Production Planning Daniel J. Meier As is well known the SA S S Y s t em is an excellent tool for data analysis, widely used for producing graphs and reports or as a decision support system. However. it also can be used for other types of system development either on mainframe or on PC. The following example shows a PC based application for computer aided production planning (CAPP). developed for a swiss chemical company. TheCAPP System enables the plant production planner to make quick, flexible and precise plans. The scheduling problem - when to make which product on which machine - is solved for a chemical production plant with the following SAS products: Base SAS' SAS/FSP and SAS/GRAPH. 19 Data On Data Karsten Boye Rasmussen "The necessity and use of machine readable documentation for data files." Data do not fall from heaven. The singular datum - the value of a variable - is a single description of the particular case. In order to choose intelligently between the variables and interpret presentations of the data (the collection of cases), we must have information on the representation or meaning of this datum. There have been some improvements in the SAS ability to store information about the meaning of data . The SAS tools for. describing a variable (lABEL, FORMAT, MISSING, SCL-statement, FSP screens, etc.) are steps in the right direction. But these features are insufficiently integrated to supply the user with information to retrieve and select between the variables. 21 Design And Implementation Of Clinical Data Management Applications On A PC Network Mark Crawford In March 1988 we started to assess both the potential and impact of SAS/ AF software on our Clinical Data Management systems. The presentation covers aspects of the whole process from installation of the central SAS version on a file server to the implementation of multi-user applications on that network. Some simple 'benchmark' performance figures will be given to highlight the efficiency differences when using this type of system configuration. 449 Mark L. Crawford During this presentation I will be talking about five general topics. 1) The Chronology of SAS usage in B.I.L. 2) The Scope and Size of the Current Network. 3) Current SAS Service to Users. 4) The General Philosophy. 5) Future Directions. 1) The Chronology of SAS Usage at Boehringer Ingelheim Limited. 22 Enhancing SAS/SHARE Software Capability Dataset, Control, Locking, And Enqueueing Phil Lucas SAS/SHAAE' software allows two or more users to update a SAS' data library sImultaneously. The key to SAS/SHAAE soft· ware is a separate SAS executIon called the server. whIch per· forms read and write operatIons on behalf of the users who are sharing a library. When a read or write request from a user con· flicts with ongoing activities of other users. the server rejects the request and the user'S PAOC or DATA STEP does not execute. SAS/SHAAE software itself oHers no way to avoid these con· flicts. However. sites licensing SAS/SHAAESOFTWARE can use exits from the SAS System to implement SAS source statements that enable a SAS program to Check for conflicts before they occur or to wait until the required data set is available for process· ing. These statements enable a SAS programmer to preserve the natural design of an application and take full advantage of SAS/SHARE software without risking the integrity of Ihe data inVOlved proc step, macro variable, sysrc, dataset, libname statement source 5

24 Full Syntax Checking Of User Statements In A Menu System Anders Sk In this paper we will present some ideas that we have found useful, whentryingtb design a "foolproof" menu system, for specifying complex selection criteria. We have designed a method to obtain, what we call, a "95 percent syntax check" when the USer presses ENTER, and a Full Syntax Check when the user submits the statements to SAS for execution. The system can be used on IBM, VAX, PC, etc. The only facilities required for this is SAS/BASE and SAS/AF, standard version 5. Only the reduced macro facility, available e.g. on the VAX computer, is needed. A possibility to display the SAS Log in the menu system would be a most valuable tool, to further improve the system. The problem of catching logical errors in user specifica~ tions is discussed. Finally we consider the SQL syntax to be introduced in version 6 of the SAS System. The need for SQL syntax check in SCL is pointed out proc sql, macro variable, dataset, macro facility, error message, sas log, proc step source 7
25 Goodness Of Fit Tests And Goodness Of Homogeneity Tests With The SAS System C. Derquenne Before applying statistical methods, many people who have analysed initial data would like to know to which reference population they are associated to. Many statisticians, such as Kolmogorov, Pearson, Cramer-Von Mises, Kuiper, ... have answered these questions by both Goodness of Fit tests and Goodness of Homogeneity tests. In addition there are other problems with the estimation of parameters of theorical laws, here again several methods have been proposed. This software has been created to solve the problems of SAS System users. There users include reliability experts, economists as well as meteorologists. Empirical laws at twenty-three laws of probability, such as Normal, Log-Normal, Wei bull, Gumbel, ... can be fitted onto this software with the help of six goodness of Fit tests. It is also possible to estimate the parameters of these laws of probability. The hombgeneity of empirical laws in comparaison wit~ a given reference population can also be tested goodness of fit, probability distribution, cumulative frequency, null hypothesis, sample, normal distribution, proc step source 11

29 HyTAO - An Expert System For Statistical Data Processing Markku Korhonen HyTAO - an "expert" system for statistical data processing Markku Korhonen This paper describes an "expert" system supporting in the use of statistie~l packages. HyTAO is a front-end for several statistical programs including SAS . The system is intended to users which have at least some statistical knowldge. On the other hand, minimal knowldge on statistical packages or on the computer is required. The user can describe his tasks, not quite in natural language, but in statistical language. The basic parts of the system are: A fairly large collection of problem based documents, a search mechanism, task definition and execution mechanism and an analyzer (for task or model selection and interpretation of results). 31 Introducing A New Statistical Package (i,e. SAS Software) In A University Environment Per H. Jacobsen This presentation starts with a few facts about our university, andsummarize a very short history of statistical computing at the University of Oslo (UiO). A few interesting characteristics of the situation at Via over the years will be pointed out. This leads us uptiII today, and I will present an outline of the situation at UiO today. The computing resources are surveyed, and the statistical packages we support are presented together with some remarks on our strategy regarding software for statistical data analysis within the university information technology architecture. The. next topic is a closer look at the usage of SAS at Via. A few comments are made on organisational matters concerning the university community and its surroundings. A few pecularities of the university community are metioned because I believe them to be important parameters affecting the organization of the computing services at large statistical software, data science source 10

43 Release 6.06 Of The SAS System Under VMS Hints And Recommendations To Help You Adjust Colin J. Harris A new version of the SAS System under VMS can cause anticipation or anxiety. Some programmers look forward to the new enhancements while others tremble at the specter of change. Version 5 under VMS, AOSjVS, and PRIMOS had a common supervisor written in PL/I with a small percentage of code in each minicomputer's own assembly language. This supervisor was a different supervisor than the SAS supervisor for IBM mainframes, which had been implemented primarily using assembly language. Only the supervisor was different in the minicomputer and mainframe implementations: the procedure code was identical on both systems. With the new Multi-Vendor Architecture in Version 6, the supervisor code, written in C, is portable across all operating systems. While compatibility with Version 5 was a major concern in design and implementation, in the case where the two separate Version 5 supervisors behaved differentl y or the syntax was different, a choice had to be made proc step, dataset, where statement, logistic distribution, macro variable, proc princomp source 15
44 Sample Size For Two-Stage Designs In Phase II Clinical Trials Alfredo Ardia Phase II clinical trial are designed with the aim of screening new drugs or to assessing if a specific treatment has "sufficient efficacy" to justify further development. .. Referring only to situations in which therapeutic efficacy is expressed on the basis of a response probability and considering the common case in which one treatment is studied and the comparison is against a predetermined standard, the problem is to decide if the treatment has an activity that exceeds this value and the size of the study has to be such to test the appropriate consequent hypothesis system at a chosen significance level with a specified power. Designs that permit early termination of the trial are now widely used when there are ethical reasons for early stopping (in case of ineffectiveness) or for early reporting (in case of effectiveness). In this paper we present a procedure for the calculation of the sample size for Gehan's and Fleming's two-stage designs, two of the commonly used phase ii, proc calis, sample size, sample source 6

Craig Drury
The use of high-level, three-dimensional (3D) graphics modeling and animation systems has historically been used almost exclusively by graphic arts and the broadcast industry. A new wave of usage is emerging from several different, relatively unrelated applications with a need to create realistic 3D images for visualization. With this technology, designers and engineers are able to promote a better understanding of ideas and processes. The introduction of powerful, low-cost 3D workstations makes this type of product more affordable by a broader base of Users. 48 SAS/AF Software In Clinical Data Applications Mark Crawford With the release of version 6.03 (personal computer version) in March 1988, SAS have provided a very powerful tool for applications development in SAS/AF using Screen Control Language (SCL). A live demonstration was presented of an . application developed at Boehringer Ingelheim to assess SAS/ AF for use by a wide range of personnel in the Medical Division. It is hoped that the demonstration will give some insight into the kind of systems that can be produced. It should be noted that some of the options to be shown have simply involved importing SAS programs written in the program editor and modified in AF. Incorporating SAS programs generated in this way can take as little as 10 minutes whilst having to add as little as ~ wordS to modify the code. This makes SAS/AF efficient, not only can we assess projects on a regular basis using summaries and tabulations, but when a project is complete, the code for tables is already written clinical trial, adverse events, proc step, data review, sas output, system organ class, clinical data, dataset, data cleaning source 26

53 The Facilities Of Sas/Graph Software In Cartography And How To Improve Them Karin Essmann,
Ulrike Scheuble
In this paper we want to demonstrate the facilities of SAS/GRAPH software used in cartography and how to improve them. SAS is not just a statistic system but it offers a great deal of graphic functions to visualize statistical data. Considering this fact we will investigate the capabilities of SAS/GRAPII in regard to cartography. SAS sup ports the production of standard maps as business graphics while special cartographic functions for complex thematic maps are missing. First we intend to give a short overview into the working field of a map maker: Cartography is "the art, science and technology of making maps together with their study as scientific documents and works of art. In this context maps may be regarded as including all types of maps, plans, charts and sections, three dimensional models and globes representing the Earth or any celestial body at any scale."
