1 A Concept on Data Delivery for Large Enterprisewide Information Systems Stephan Tobler Stephan Tobler Release 1.2 May 1995 This paper will discuss a practical approach to the gathering of information from a variety of data sources to any frontend application and focus on some typical problems in data delivery systems. The concept is based on a three level database architecture realized with the SAS system as a single point of control on a central platform. Source data may come from different platforms and databases and be integrated into an enterprisewide infobase which represents a neutral basis for distribution to application-specific subsets on central or decentral computing services. This concept is currently implemented under control of the SAS system on an MVS mainframe accessing SAPs Rl2, DB2 and flat files, including data distribution to a management information system of the PTT Telecom on an OSFIl server. Modularity in design and coding supports the universal usability of the system. 253 libname statement, raw data, lookup, data wrangling, dataset, data step source 14

3 A Fin(ance)e Application for Consolidation Aswin Bouwmeester Consolidating is the proceSs of summarising financial data. This paper explains why and how consolidating is done. It also discusses the ways financial data can be stored in a database. In the last section of this paper an application is described which was built for reporting and analysing financial data. It is' built by PW Consulting and The Royal VanUerHave group. Consolidating Why? Summarizing financial data is not a straight forward process. Unlike most other data you cannot just add values to get a total. Totals have to be calculated according to certain rules, consolidation rules. For example: A company consists of two departments. Each department sells products. The sales of a department is calculated by adding the sales of all products for this department. Calculating the sales of the company by adding the total sales of both departments would result in a too high value if these departments are selling (a part of their) products to each other data dictionary, proc step source 4

10 A Survey of Version Control Strategies for SAS Application Development Teams Philip R. Holland There is no utility which will control the versions of SASe catalog entries provided by the SAS Institute, so SAS/AF· application development teams must provide their own. ·This paper will discuss the big question of how much effort is really needed to create adequate controls for different sized development teams, giving the risks and benefits of a spectrum of version control strategies. These strategies described range from having no version control at all, where the risks to a software development could be great, to software solutions, where the cost of production could exceed the benefits to a small development team. Each SASI AF application development team must select the appropriate strategy which provides a balance between the risk and the development costs from those available catalog entry, dataset, proc step source 8

12 A Way to Handle Pharmacokinetic Studies with SAS Software Jean-Michel Cardot In order to meet the need for the re-deployment of an application allowing the study of pharmacokinetic data, elBA-GEIGY has chosen SAS because of its functional resources and the scope of its potential. The main constraints to this operation were to take back the existing data (hundreds of studies) and to set up a data model allowing to work on either a single study or on several studies at the same time. Originally based on a relational craft-oriented data model, as well as on a set of reusable macros, the technical approach has been supplemented by a secured data input process and a relevant packaging. The whole led to an application allowing the storage of the data of a study, the calculation of the model-independent pharmacokinetic parameters, diverse simulations, reports (tables and graphics) that can be exported into office automation softwares. Besides, specific meta analyses that concern a set of studies are available excel, sample, raw data, lookup, t1/2, proc sql, pk parameter source 8

16 AMIS: Developing a Data Warehouse for Actuaries Jan Willem van der Grijp The Actuarial Department of the Dutch business unit of Swiss-based Zurich Insurance Group, needed a (information) database with data on all their life insurance products to support two of the main tasks of the actuaries: Regularly reporting to the Dutch Insurance Chamber (obligatory by the Dutch Insurance Law) To support policy making with Cash Flow projections, Profit Analyses etc. of their insurance portfolio. A Data Warehouse has been designed and implemented that contains the necessary information for all products to support both tasks (and others). The Data Warehouse is refreshed on a monthly basis with data coming from eleven different administrative systems. These administrative systems vary from SQUDS databases on the IBM mainframe to SQU Windows databases on the OS/2 platform insurer, policy, life insurance source 10

22 APPS - a 5th Generation Sales Planning and Forecasting System Sven Viergutz This paper describes the Meta Planning capabilities of the Sales Planning and Fore casting System APPS, which was developed at the Scientific Center Heidelberg of IBM Information Systems, Germany for a large German producer of brand goods. APPS is developed entirely on the basis of the SAS@ System. 2 Sales Planning as a Process In a passive approach, sales planning can be thought of being the quantitative extrapolation of sales data from the past into the future. In this regard, forecasting of time series and planning are synonymous, and the major challenge of a large company is to master many such series each day, in particular in the case of a broad and highly diversified product portfolio, with a large number of customers addressed through various distribution channels. In fact, good forecasts are the core of any reliable planning, for they attempt to anticipate the future on a rational basis time series analysis, outlier source 12

24 Building a Data Warehouse with SAS Software in the UNIX Environment Karen Grippo A c;ommon trend in corporations today is "downsizing" ~ moving applic;~tions from expensive mall'lframes to more affordable mid-range platforms. The Information Center or OLIn & Bradstreet Information Systems, faced with the challenge of mOiling fulfi"ment off the mainframe, has chosen SAS software not only as the vehicle for its data analysis and delivery but also as its database management system. Twenty gigabytes, extracted from mainframe legacy databases, have been loadecl C?nto an ~IP-UX platform as indexed SAS data file.. Two data structLlres (8 table mapping the data files to tile systems and a clata dictionary mapping data elements to data flies) and a set of SAS macros have been developed to give the Information Center developers and business users transparent ac:c:ess to the data, freeing them from the need to know data file or data element locljllions. 39 EIS at LVM: Experiences, Ideas, Strategies Thomas Koschlig In this presentation the use of the SAS-system at the LVM-Versicherungen and its benefits for this insurance-company will be presented. The first part oft\lepresentation will focus on Data Warehouse with 250 users and more than 10,000 statistics. This "backbone" gives the company the flexibility and transparency it needs especially on the new European market. Based on Data Warehouse more than 40 EIS systems have been developed within the last 5 years to give executives the possibility to get the answers to their questions immediately. More than 350 users in the headoffice and 200 laptop-users elsewhere in Germany work with these systems today. The key-issues for developing the EIS-Systems will finish this paper. As data-problems, programming-aspects and system-requirements are discussed in this final chapter any EIS developer will get some hints and tips. As a result of this presentation he should be able to plan his EIS-project more realistically source 10

41 Enhancing SAS Output on Mainframes with IBM's DCF Christel Ott by Christel Ott & Rolf Annen Swissair Information Systems On the mainframe-platform SAS output tends to look rather poor. Instead of enhancing the appearance by transferring the output to PC applications, an elegant solution to the problem uses IBM's DCF on the mainframe. Your text SAS Output (PROC PRINT, PROC TABULATE) will look more professional and the integration of scalable SAS/GRAPH page segments will enrich your DCF documents. Text SAS Output To enable the use of DCF/GML together with SAS output you have to put your data on a file either by the procedure PROC PRINTTO or by PUT-statements together with the FILE-statement. In doing so you specify the appropriate DCF/GML tags by means of TITLE or FOOTNOTE statements or directly with PUT-statements sas output, proc step source 10

44 From Cost Accounting to Service Levels and Capacity Planning Silvio Orsini In 1992 the Bank of Italy needed a procedure to charge back the utilization of EDP resources of the mainframes (running MVS) to the end users. The base of this activity is the measurement of resource utilization (CPU, DASD, TAPES, PRINTERS) and the summary for specific different user groups for long term periods. The measured resources were: CPU in Service Units; DASD in GigaBytes; CONTROL UNITS in Start Subchannel; Automaf~c Tape Library in number of mounts; Tapes in number of tapes; Printers in number of lines printed. The chargeback procedure was developed to allocate the computer resource utilization to different use~ groups who are part of the Functional Units of the Bank of Italy. · Before starting with the project we considered the Capacity Management needs which also involved Capacity Planning, Service Levels and Performance Measurements. These activities were already running with different products and disomogeneous databases capacity planning, batch job source 14
45 From the Neolithic to the Nineties: The Evolution of Capacity and Performance Reporting Douglas Clarke We all collect vast amounts of data for CPE, but how to tum this into "information"? Over the past three years the Capacity Planning team at General Accident have evolved this from an almost prehistoric technological level into a coherent, online reference system using a SAS/ AF@ GUI application, whilst remaining firmly rooted in SAS@ and MXG@. "The way we were" centred upon voluminous (b&w) paper reports which were both unreadable and unread, suffered from inconsistent "workload" definitions, and took forever to produce. We are now able to present meaningful (and usable) information to managers, online at their own desks. This MI is readily available and quickly updated, and is presented through a "manager-friendly· PC-based system. The evolutionary path involved structuring workloads, combining data from multiple monitors, standardizing reports, and (eventually) building the Capacity/MI FRAME system for PC/LAN capacity planning, sas base, macro definition source 5

60 Macro Procedure for Equivalence Testing Francois Montestruc The classical statistical methodology in clinical trials of pharmaceutical drugs aims at proving the superiority of one drug on the other. In case of a not significant difference, one is not allowed to conclude to the equivalence of the two drugs~ If one aims at demonstrating the equivalence of two drugs, one has to use a special study design. First, one must fix a limit AL, clinically relevant to demonstrate the superiority of one drug on another (if the difference between the two drugs is greater than AL, we conclude that the two drugs are not equivalent). Then a study will be conducted to test between the null hypothesis of inequivalence and an alternative hypotheSiS of difference. This paper presents a SAS macro-program, based on macro-windows, which can interactivelly compute several statistical methods for testing equivalence. It also calculates the number of subjects needed to ensure a given power. Key words: Equivalence. Macro-windows. 66 MIS based on CSF Lars Odd Petersen MIS based on CSF Lars Odd Petersen Jens Bisballe Planning Management information has been a great concern to public as well as pri vate enterprises during the years. Although it may seem a simple banality to select a number of management key figures, it is rather difficult in practice to establish systems as Management Information Systems (MIS) and integrate their use in management practice. It is basically a matter to be discussed what should be selected as correct information or key figures. Often management does not spent the needed and sufficient time on such clarification. It often proves that although too much information is available, important information is lacking. Information must be concentrated in order not to loose the comprehensive view. 68 Model Building for the Cox Proportional Hazards Model with the SAS System Richard Vonk To fit a Cox proportional hazards model, the SAS procedure PROC PHREG can be used. For variable selection, the 'forward', 'backward' or 'stepwise' options are available. These are useful if the explanatory variables are dichotomous. However, factors with n> 2 main effects can not be readily included. In a DATA STEP, indicator variables have to be created for each factor. The automatic selection options should not be used if such factors need to be included in the model. A 'manual' model selection involves comparing the values of the -2 Log Likelihood statistics of many nested models on multiple outputs. It is, however, more efficient to use macros which provide the relevant information in a condensed way. Macros facilitating model selection for the Cox proportional hazard model using the -2 Log Likelihood statistic will be presented. In particular, these macros could be used where multi-level variables are involved likelihood function, proc phreg, proc step, out=, binary variable, confidence interval, regression analysis, relative risk, proc sort, feature selection, macro variable, macro definition source 12

RAND/UCLA hypothesised that producing explicit guidelines for care would help to improve the health status by addressing both the overuse and underuse of care. The RAND/UCLA method includes the following elements: . a) Identification of an expert panel. b) Development of a list of clinical indications that categorises patients in terms of their symptoms, past medical history, and results of previous diagnostic tests. In this way it is possible to describe clinically homogenous groups of patients. c) Transforming clinical indications in scenarios for which a judgement is sought from each panellist using a 1-9 rating (very inappropriate to very appropriate). d) Re-evaluation of the initial rating to only those scenarios judged as equivocal andlor inappropriate during the first round. e) Final Analysis proc step, proc freq, proc format, macro facility, macro conditional source 12

98 Statistics and Democracy Preference Mapping in Opinion Poll Analysis Guido Cuzzocrea The Italian socio-political context has been recently characterised by important events such as the introduction of the majority electoral system and the disappearance or substantial transformation of traditional parties: these changes have highlighted the necessity of analysing the new characteristics, motivations and needs of potential voters. Opinion polls should focus their attention not only on voting behaviour forecasting, but on voter profiles as a complex phenomenon. The analysis of results by traditional tabular layout is not suitable for the joint treatment of multivariate data matrices, emphasising singular aspects and often leading to biased interpretations. Itl our approach we combine the use of statistical multivariate techniques with techniques for data organisation: we will show how to give the view of the entire forest rather than that of singletrees using the SAS System. 1 proc corresp, sample, proc freq, median, proc step, proc princomp source 6

In this context, the nearest neighbour kernel estimator represents one attractive technique. For the practical appli cation of the nearest neighbour kernel method, the actual number of nearest neighbours to, be included into the calculation, which corresponds to the "bandwidth parameter" in the more general setting of nonparametric functional estimation, has to be specified. Ad hoc rules applied in practice have only a lhnited theoretical foundation. In the paper, the problem is considered in the special case of hazard rate estimation from censored data. In this framework, the so-called "modified likelihood criterion" has been suggested as an automatic data-driven procedure to select an appropriate bandwidth parameter. An effi cient algorithm and its computational realization in SAS/IML have been developed and are discussed in detail hazard function, likelihood function, censoring, data cleaning source 13

118 The Times They are a Changing - The Increasing Case for a Multidisciplinary Approach to Statistical Applications Nicholas Graham Dyson This paper outlines the changing nature of computing within a statistical production environment of a government Department (DSS) where the rapid development of Information Technology (IT) in recent years and the increasing involvement of statisticians with computing, has resulted in many statistical users now being of least equally, if not more, proficient in the areas of IT related to their particular needs than many IT professionals. Such changes raise important organisational issues since the traditional approach, used by the Department, in providing IT support by means of a separate section/organisation, outside the direct control of the statisticians, is now not efficiently providing the level of support required. The integration of IT support and statistical user functions, driven by user needs, is therefore discussed and the use of matrix organisation structures to address these issues outlined data science, sample source 11

123 Transforming and Presenting Information From Raw Data to an Organized Document Through the SAS System Version 6.08 for Windows Features Paola Balardi To successfully obtain information from large amounts of data it is necessary to integrate a DBMS, statistical software and a carefully prepared presentation of results. Inner in-data information can be elicited at 3 levels: raw data, readable data, elaborated data. Analyzing raw data can be prohibitively time consuming. Moreover data volume contributing to the information is usually massive (many observations for many variables) and quantitative information from a tabulating process can constitute the readable-data stadium of information. It is necessary to combine different views and to organize analysis results in order to fully benefit from all the information, and to prepare a clear, informative· and exhaustive document (elaborated data) raw data, sample, proc step, dataset, macro definition, proc sql, macro variable, proc freq, macro loop source 11

M. Columbo
TV MAPS is a SASI AF application designed to map the competitive position of Prime Time TV programs by means of people meter data. These maps can help the evaluation of alternative program scheduling strategies. Socio-demographic concentration and total viewing data, stratified by sex, age, geographic area, education, and 16 life styles are collected day by day for each program aired on the 6 main Italian networks and for the total viewers. Data collected for other local commercial networks are aggregated and represented as a single netWork. Starting with 105 variables measured in a pre selected relevant period, PROC FASTCLUS/STAT and PROC CANDISC/ST AT are applied to select the most significant socio-demographic concentration variables in order to obtain the best clustering. First of all the distance matrix between cluster centroids is computed with PROC IML, then this matrix is used by PROC MDS/STAT to perform a Multi Dimensional Scaling proc step, bubble plot source 11
126 UBIRIS - A System to Support Investment Research and Publications at UBS Beat Moser UBIRIS (Union Bank Investment Research Infonnation System) is a central infonnation system to support the investment and economic research in Switzerland's largest bank. Its core part (UBIRIS Kernel) supplies analysts with both financial market and economic time. series data and tools for data analysis and the production of high quality research publications. These products are then fed into an infonnation delivery system which supports portfolio managers and investment advisers all over Switzerland (UBIRIS VISion). This paper describes the basic functionality of the research part of UBIRIS Kernel (URI: UBIRIS Research Interface) which has been realized using the frame technology of the SASiIl System and special features of Release 6.10 for WindOWSill. The application currently consists of four modules: Database Access: selection, processing and download of financial and economic time series time series analysis, data science, time series data, proc freq, data standard, data warehouse, data cleaning, excel source 10

133 Wouldn't it be Good if we Understood what Drives our Claims Kevin Williams One of the main keys to a successful business is the ability to forecast total claims incurred costs accurately. The resulting benefit to the business would be :- 1) identification of the key drivers of the claims costs 2) knowledge of the financial effects of changes to the external factors 3) understanding of the financial effects of internal decisions Two approaches were used and compared. The XII procedure produced a seasonally adjusted series which we then modelled using PROC ARIMA, as we could not make use of the automated ARIMA statement on XII due to lack of observations. The second method used was a combination of the AUTOREG procedure on the raw data and the ARlMA procedure. This paper explains the value of SAS System in enabling us to forecast claims incurred in terms of the modules used, their Consultancy skills and the procedures used. Also the problems that we encountered and how we overcame these problems using SAS proc step, proc reg, acf plot, lag function, time series analysis, proc autoreg, predictor variable source 9
