2 A Preview of SAS/STAT Version 9: Moving in New Directions and Building on Old Favorites Maura E. Stokes,
Robert N. Rodriguez,
Randy Tobias
Version 9 of SAS/STAT software brings you a vari ety of new tools for your statistical computing needs. The Power and Sample Size Application (PSS) pro vides sample size and power computations for a vari ety of analyses through a web interface. Experimen tal software in Version 9 moves SAS/STAT in new di rections, including robust regression, which is sup ported by the ROBUSTREG procedure, and logis tic regression for sample survey data, available with the SURVEYLOGISTIC procedure. In response to user requests, a number of procedures have been en hanced significantly. Conditional logistic regression is available in the LOGISTIC procedure through the new STRATA statement, and scoring of data sets is avail able through the new SCORE statement. New fea tures in several other procedures are also discussed 6
3 An Example of ODS, FTP, PROC FORMAT with HTML linked to EXCEL, then output is Emailed via PCSAS (P.S. it's automated) Zeke Torres I will review a variety of popular SAS components. The concept is to obtain SAS Data (transport) file from a remote host Use FTP (not SAS/CONNECT). Perform a PROC TABULATE or PROC PRINT etc. I get a little fancy with ODS and PROC FORMAT adding HTML to it allowing links to the EXCEL output which is also generated from this code. Finally I have my PCSAS Session email all of the output to 'end users' and then PAGE myself with a message telling me it all worked. All from my PC SAS Session. And its automated using MS Win95 Schedule Task Manager. So when I am having breakfast at home my PC at work is actually working! When I finally do get to the office I have a custom SASLOG I can review since I set up the SAS CONFIG file to be specific for this code proc format, proc step, excel 11
4 An Introduction to ODS Tagsets Kevin Davidson An Introduction to ODS TAGSETS Kevin Davidson FSD Data Services, Inc. Beginning in SAS Version 8.2, ODS MARKUP allows users to create customized output using TAGSETS. There are over 20 different TAGSETS that ship with Version 8.2. This paper will review the steps needed to modify a SAS shipped tagset to achieve a desired customized look for HTML output proc template, proc step, ods xml, ods html 8

8 Geostatistical Tools in the SAS System E. Barry Moser The SAS System provides several procedures for the development of geostatistical spatial prediction models including PROC VARIOGRAM followed by PROC KRIGE2D, PROC MIXED using spatial covariance structures, and PROC MIXED or PROC REG using a trend surface. One can also reproduce and extend these methods using PROC IML. The use of these procedures for geostatistical spatial prediction will be illustrated, along with a variety of supporting grephics that are useful diagnostics in conjunction with these methods proc step, proc mixed, outlier 6
9 Get the Data without SAS/CONNECT? And the PC SAS user does HOW LITTLE? With a shoestring budget? Zeke Torres Distribute SAS (almost any data) not only to your own machine but various users you may support throughout your organization even if SASIConnect is available or not. SASIConnect was available as in this case, however the client specifically requested to stop giving PC SAS users access to SAS/CONNECT and the Host CPU. The main intent was to keep the ad-hoc SAS report(s) submitted by PC SAS users from draining the CPU resources but not put constraints on their ability to produce reports their departments required. I was able to come up with a solution for my client by using simple tools available with PC SAS and FTP sas log, proc step, dataset 6
10 Grading Efficiency Based On Gamma Distribution with SAS Procedures Dagan Zhang Grading efficiency, accuracy, or quality ofa same kind of jobs done by a group of people individually is necessary to raise administration level, e.g. cure efficiency of physicians, data accuracy of entries, judgment fairness of judges, etc. An illustrative example with faked data is given in this paper. Let NTC be number of treatments/services provided by a DC (doctor of chiropractic) for a claimant (injured worker), ANTCD average ofNTC for a DC, an index measuring cure efficiency of DCs. Many DCs service for only a few of claimants, i.e. many ANTCD values are means of small samples of the population constructed by NTC values. SAS PROC CORR, univariate, and chart are used. 1. We conclude that NTC is gamma distributed. 2. A gamma test technology has been developed. 3. With Chebyshev's Inequality for simplifying, the technology is utilized to grade cure efficiency of DCs sample, confidence interval, probability distribution, gamma distribution, proc step, proc corr, proc univariate 8

16 Managing Your Manager Maura Schreier-Fleming Managing Your Manager Maura Schreier-Fleming, Best@Selling Our managers are our most important 'customers'. While we may wish that some of our managers were different, the reality is that the only behavior we can control is our own. We can control it when we choose how we respond to others. In order to manage our managers, we will choose responses that make it easier for our managers to work with us. We need to understand the meaning of different behaviors so we can better anticipate and prepare for working with our managers. There are two dimensions of behaviors to study. They are assertive behaviors and responsive behaviors. Assertiveness is defined as how others see us being forceful or directive over people or situations. Our behavior gives clues about our assertiveness. Our voice, movements and body gestures all give clues about our level of assertiveness 7
17 MERGING: Comparing the DATA Step with SQL Malachy J. Foley Which merges files better: the SAS DATA STEP or SAS SQL? Traditionally, the only way to merge files in SAS was via the SAS DATA STEP. Now SAS provides a Structured Query Language (SQL) facility which also merges files. This tutorial compares and contrasts these two merge facilities. It examines the pros and cons of each merge technique. It looks at DATA STEP code to perform specific merges and then looks at the corresponding SQL code to perform the same merges proc sql, inner join, create table, full join, proc step, right join, where statement, coalesce function, data merging, relational database, merge statement 11

19 Multi-Level Web-Based Analysis System for Semiconductor Parametric Data Tom Winter,
Willy Waks
Early semiconductor process development is especially dependent on parametric data; analysis is hampered by the large volumes generated and general inability of most engineers to effectively retrieve the data and then process into summarized tables, reports & graphs. The SAS system developed allows the engineer to simply browse through the pre-generated reports - both high level and low level - and quickly visualize and capture the needed data. Key input isa "specs" file with the desired parameters for analysis, description, upper/lower spec limits, tsrget and category (for certain summarized reports). Reports are HfML with multilevel drill dam) boxcharts; graphics for yields, loss paretos, wafer maps, probability distributions and histograms; yield tables showing summarized and detailed failures to meet spec; summarized text reports & gifs for cpk. Pregenerated reports are created by executing SAS through a series of perl programs and configuration files for different devices box plot, extract, proc step, histogram, proc sql 6
20 ODS (Output Delivery System) Dana Rafiee proc tabulate, proc step, output delivery system 8
21 ODS: A Primer Matthew Grover The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the features provided by the Output Delivery System (ODS). ODS was first released in version 7 of SAS and in subsequent releases has seen increased functionality. This paper focuses on 3 keys features of ODS. I.) The ability to isolate distinct pieces of information created by a procedure into separate datasets. For example, output from PROC Univarate can be separated into Basic Measures, TestsForLocations, Quantiles, and ExtremeObs. 2.) Destinations, an additional feature of ODS, provide a variety of choices (HTML, RTF, MARKUP, XML, PCL) for redirecting output. 3.) PROC TEMPLATE, which provides further customization of ODS output content (column order, data formats) and style (font size, font fiice, color). Rationale The Output Delivery System was specifically designed to overcome the output limitations found in early versions of the SAS System output delivery system, proc step, ods output, proc corr, proc means 8

26 SAS Macro Program to 'Clean' Medicaid Claims Gary E. Moore To derive many of our agency's reported measures, we need to know how many Medicaid recipients received a given treatment or met a certain criterion. One step in the overall derivation process is retrieving medical claims and then 'cleaning' them based on the claim's status. This poster describes the process we use and discusses how the process is ''helped along" with the aid of the macro programming facility ofSAS data step, macro definition, proc step 4
27 SAS/IntrNet to XML to Visual Basic Anthony Hughes SAS Intrnet to XML to Visual Basic By Anthony Hughes - Abacus Technical Services, Inc. This paper will describe model architecture in use at Texas Instruments Corp. to distribute information from the factory floor to an end-user's Personal Computer. The model architecture uses several components, including SAS Institute products, Microsoft Corp. tools such as Visual Basic, and web-oriented Information Technology languages such as HTML and XML. Data that describes factory-floor operations at TI is stored on a Unix-based Sun computer. The data is managed by components of the SAS product family, which provides remote access to the data through the SASlIntrnet and SAS/SHARE*NET products, among others. A Web server is constantly running. It receives an incoming Web request from a client application and then sends a request for service to a continuously running SAS session, called the Application Server, a component of SASlIntrnet sas base, macro variable, macro definition 25

30 Solving with RESOLVE Minh Duong,
Dave Brodie,
Kevin Davidson
The RESOLVE function provides the capability of resolving a macro variable or a macro reference inside a text string. In many instances, this can help you generalize and simplify your code. We will work through an example of displaying a radio box on an HTML form where the radio box must detect and display what had been previously selected and stored in a SAS data set. Also discussed will be several advantages to using the RESOLVE function instead of SYMGET macro variable, %if-%then-%else, data step, macro facility, macro definition 7

34 Summarizing Data with Base SAS PROCs Deborah B. Buck Base SAS provides a number of procedures designed to aid the SAS user in developing data summary reports. These procedures include MEANS, UNIVARIATE, FREQ, REPORT and TABULATE. Additionally, PROC FORMAT is also available to modify the appearance of data values or combine values into desired categories within PROCs without changing actual data values or creating new variables. This presentation explores various common types of summary reports and what factors you should conSider in deciding which procedure is best suited to your reporting needs. It is not meant to be a detailed tutorial on PROC STEP programming code for all of these procedures, but rather a guide on how to decide which procedures fits the requirements for a given report proc step, proc report, proc print, sas base, proc tabulate, proc format, proc means, proc freq, if-then-else 8
35 Taking Charge of the SAS Environment for Adaptive Production Reporting Dwight Eggers A SAS application developer needs to be aware of the elements of the environment in which his process will run and know how to manipulate these in a disciplined manner. This is especially important when attempting to implement an application that is transportable to other platforms or operating systems. It is also important for achieving modular code that is reusable by other applications. This paper presents a technique by which the scope of portions of the SAS environment can be limited. It is described within the context of a case history for a speCific production ,reporting application. The compiled macros, custom formats, and macro variables are manipulated with an environment stack so that the scope of these elements can be easily limited or restored during the life of the process. This mechanism is controlled within the program flow by the means of a script that drives the process proc sql, macro variable, proc step, call execute, macro definition 10

37 The Influence of Personality on Data Collection Barbara Foster Individuals differ in a multitude of ways but over history four "types" or "temperaments" have consistently been discussed. These temperaments, which are an integral part of an individual's personality, influence how people react and respond to their environment and other individuals'such as spouses or children. Temperamentsalso influence how people handle work assignments and how they interact with colleagues and supervisors. Knowing the temperament types can enable a supervisor or manager to match projects or assignments with individuals. Knowing the temperament types can also help a supervisor minimize the negative aspects and maximize the positive aspects of any temperament type. The focus of this presentation is the influence of temperament on Data Collection. Not everyone approaches a given assignment in the same way and to the same degree of detail. How the temperament types differ in response to data collection will be explained 6
38 The Procedure of Uploading and Processing Files Via the Web Using HTML Forms Jim Hoffman This presentation will provide information to participants on the processes required for file uploads from PC's and processing them on the host system. Featured are a Multi-purpose web page and a Perl script that controls the upload process. A SAS program is called from Perl to process the uploaded data. The script then directs which page the browser displays. Sufficient code and instructions will be shown for the sawy user to implement 4
39 Up and Out: Where We're Going with Scalability in SAS Version 9 Cheryl Doninger This paper gives an overview of the ways that SAS is addressing perfonnance through scalability in SAS Version 9. Scalability features have been implemented in many areas ofSAS Version 9 to allow your applications to scale up and scale out. These include: Multi-Process (MP) CONNECT, the Scalable Perfonnance Data Engine (SPDE engine), certain SAS/ ACCESS engines, several scalable SAS procedures, the Scalable Perfonnance Data (SPD) Server, the Open Metadata Server, and * the Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) Server. 40 User Defined Format Specification Michel F. Schexnayder User Defined Format Documentation Michel Schexnayder, Louisiana State University SAS user defined formats provide a tool that can save programming and execution time as well as improve the appearance of output. User defined formats enhance the appearance of reports by substituting intelligible descriptions in place of obscure codes. The PROC FORMAT cntlin= option converts a code table into a user defined format. A SAS permanent library is the appropriate place to store user defined formats. With the growth of this format library comes the need to document its contents. This documentation consists of: How can the format be updated? Where did the descriptions come from? When was the format last updated? SAS automatically provides some of the needed documentation. Combining the data SAS automatically stores with a small additional file produces the documentation needed to maintain a large user defined format library proc step, proc format 5
