An application of Image Editor and Image Management to recoreded traffic video images |
Giovanni Meccariello, Livia Della Ragione, Mario Rapone |
In this paper some results relative to a research project developed by Istituto Motori of Italian National Research Council, are presented. Different cars have been instrumented in Istituto Motori and periodically they perform planned trips through the center of Naples, along an expressway (called Tangenziale) to by-pass the city center and along ways that connect Naples to different towns of Campania Region. Data concerning kinematic informations relative to each trip performed by each car are stored in a SAS data set and analyzed to define a driving cycle by multivariate statistical analysis. In particular, in this paper is described how the video images recorded by video camera can be integrated with other traffic visulization tools, with the aim of the determination of precise location of actual detected data and qualitative assessment of traffic conditions. A UNIX tool captures and digitizes video signals from VCRs sources |

Creating and exploiting a "Customer Table" with the SAS System: from the Data Warehouse to Direct Marketing Campaigns |
Guido Cuzzocrea, Frank Fiocca, Salvina Piccarreta |
The need of an efficient, historical and customer centric information system, led ZURIGO Italia to build a Marketing Data Warehouse. The main goal being, to assist the company's business users in the implementation of target marketing strategies. Data Marts and Business Applications, that use the warehouse as a data source, have been developed to support decision makers in Data Mining and exploitation activities. A specific requirement was a "user-friendly" environment, designed to highlight all the relevant information regarding a client, for the purpose of evaluating its potential and, finally, to select the best campaign targets. The "Customer Table Application" satisfies these needs through the following architecture: one record per client, with information regarding its past and current behaviour as an insurance customer, summarised according to such business criteria as profitability, claims index and attrition probability |

Credit Risk Measurement for a Bank Loans Portfolio |
Emiliano Laruccia, Valter Lazzari |
For Italian Banks, credit risk measurement and management is one of the areas where the difference between theory and practice is wider. Because of the limited availability of data, it's difficult to implement standard credit risk models (i.e. Credit Metrics and Credit Risk Plus). This paper provides a simple approach to measure credit risk on a portfolio of bank loans, taking into consideration correlations between different groups of borrowers and correcting for recovery rates. Using the results of a scoring system, borrowers are grouped in homogeneous classes of risk. Through a simulation we are able to obtain the loan loss distribution, accounting for the concentration of loans in each class of risk and for the effect of recovery rates. 1. Credit Risk: definition and measurement Credit risk measurement (CRM) can be observed in two different perspectives. On one hand, CRM is aimed to measure potential losses due to insolvency |

Data Analysis and Ecological Classification |
Gabriela Augusto, Marco Painho |
Classification is a basic tool for knowledge conceptualisation in any science. Ecology is not an exception. There are a huge number of classification methods, since the empirical classification that we use in everyday life, until the most recent neuronal networks methods. To perform an ecosystems classification, in this project, the chosen methodology was cluster analysis, more specifically hierarchical classification. In this paper are compared only tree classification algorithms together with two measures of similarity, in Europe Ecosystems Classification. Biogeography experts appreciated the results, and we could reach a methodology that leaded us to an ecological consistent classification. However, being cluster analysis only a set of heuristic procedures to find natural patterns in a collection of data, it can only suggest a classification, and is up to the experts to appreciate the infinite number of results, that can be obtained by this procedure |

Intergrating SAS in Corporate IT |
John M. LaBore, Thomas H. Burger |
Applied users widely recognize the value of information delivery using SAS software. Integrating SAS into the business increases and streamlines productivity. However, limited awareness may exist in corporate IT of the role these tools play in knowledge formation for business solutions. The undervaluation of SAS stems from historical use by researchers, rather than IT developers enamoured by new technology. This can be remedied by raising corporate IT's awareness of cutting- edge SAS tools and the value of their adoption for timely solutions to a growing range of tasks. We discuss issues associated with raising corporate IT's awareness of the power of SAS software |

Knit Perl and SAS Software for DIY Web Applications |
Philip R. Holland |
If your organisation develops a web-based SAS application for 30+ users, then the logical choice is to use SAS/INTRNETTM software for speed, reliability and cost-effectiveness. However, your whole organisation may have fewer than 30 employees, so is there a cost- effective alternative to SAS/INTRNET software which still allows access to SAS-based data? The answer is yes, and there are a number of possible solutions. For example, by combining a client licence for Base SAS software, a web server application, a simple application dispatcher written in Perl, and a knowledge of HTML, it is possible to write SAS code and HTML to provide drill-down reports on SAS-based data to users with access only to a web browser. This paper demonstrates some of the techniques available to SAS programmers to generate drill-down applications for web browsers |

Moving to SAS Version 8 with Oracle |
Clare Somerville, Colin J. Harris |
The New Zealand Ministry of Social Policy has a large data warehouse. In production since 1996, it services several government departments across the social sector. Over sixty specialist analysts access the data directly using SAS tools, and management information is available nation-wide to over eight thousand staff using an Intranet Web interface. The warehouse platform is a large UNIX machine, with over 350 GB in production Oracle databases and SAS structures. This paper presents problems in accessing Oracle when moving from SAS Version 6.12 to 8, and solutions discovered on the way. Our immediate focus with Version 8 was to get our substantial production systems operational. All the production work with Oracle uses SAS/ACCESS to Oracle access descriptors and views, and we expected to continue in Version 8 with minimal change. The paper covers two main areas: ! Getting Version 8 SAS/ACCESS to Oracle working |

Positioning SAS Software for Corporate Effectiveness |
John M. LaBore, Thomas H. Burger |
Accelerated research and development has increased industry reliance on Information Technology (IT). Biopharmaceutical IT divisions increasingly require an infrastructure capable of providing global enterprise-wide business solutions. However, when the application of IT innovation to business solutions occurs at an insufficient rate, business needs go unfulfilled. Of particular importance to accelerating research is the implementation of application software for decision making. SAS " software provides powerful tools for data warehousing, decision support and presentation, but their effectiveness is directly proportional to an understanding of business issues and how SAS can solve them. A strategy for the integration of these tools into the business streamlines and accelerates critical processes |

Practical Tips and Techniques for Building an Enterprise Data Warehouse in an IBM environment |
John Finianos, Jugdish Mistry |
Much has been said about the implementation phase of an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) project in general terms. Those who are directly involved in this phase appreciate the real value of knowing a few practical tips and techniques in speeding up deliverables and streamlining the whole implementation phase from source access to EDW load. This paper will discuss essential tips and techniques that have been practically acquired during the implementation of a SAS based data warehouse in the banking industry. Techniques such as splitting libraries, overcoming the 5 volumes limitation of SAS libraries, synchronizing EDW load processes, collecting process log data for reporting and control, building and managing format or lookup tables, techniques for space estimation, calculations and monitoring, naming conventions, filtering data, in addition to other nifty utilities built on the job |

Presentation is Everything |
Lesa Davis |
This presentation of the Output Delivery System (ODS) provides real world examples, displaying code and matching output, from SAS procedures and SAS graph. It show's how the Output Delivery System has been designed to overcome the limitations of traditional SAS output. It will also demonstrate how new formatting options are made readily available to all users. Having used V7, V8 over the last 12 months. I have been inspired by what can be achieved using the new Output Delivery System. The ODS improves the quality of the output and allows flexibility in what can be produced. The various formats that output can be supported under include HTML, LATEX, LISTING, OUTPUT Data Sets, RTF, PS, PDF, PCL, and XML, which is a great improvement from the traditional ASCII based text format. The ODS also supports the generic desktop publishing industry |

SAS can do it - now what did you want and how did you want it? |
Alyson Cromar, Richard Coleman |
The Research and Statistics Department at UCAS is responsible for the provision of summary information relating to some 400,000 applicants to Higher Education courses through the UCAS scheme. Changes in funding policy have given birth to increasing competition amongst the universities for student: institutions are now forced to understand their markets and pre-empt competitor behaviour. In doing so, they are increasingly reliant on trends in applications. The same information is required by the funding bodies and government in determining levels of expenditure. UCAS' customers are not SAS ! programmers - they need easily digestible and understandable information on which to base their decisions. As a result we have invested heavily in SAS! software in order to be able to deliver summarised information in whichever form is most suitable to our customers. This includes the development of applications in SAS/AF!, Enterprise Miner " and |

SAS System and Efficient Integration to Advanced Web User Interface Tools |
Arto Arffmann |
The Customers have adopted web browsers as the main window to enterprise applications. Nowadays almost all of our Customers in eNiklas demand browser based user interfaces. We have developed several HTML bound reporting systems using SAS/INTRNET. The Customers want also different kinds of applications, like budgeting, implemented in web browsers. These kinds of applications, that require more advanced user interfaces, have been implemented with SAS/AF so far. HTML is too limited for these purposes. The progress in web browsers and web servers has opened up new advanced ways to implement user interfaces in web browser. eNiklas eNiklas has vast experience in the Internet and IT-consulting business. We have constantly focused on the same business idea: To help companies explore their potential to grow. This concept has made us expand rapidly. During the last decade, we have gone from nothing to become a substantial player in the e-business solutions area |

This poster presentation demonstrates what the SAS! ECO! ("Enterprise Computing Offer") suite of products can do for any business that uses telephones. SAS! products used: 1. SAS/ACCESS!-to-Datacom!--for obtaining latest customer characteristics, business equipment terminology, product descriptions, country codes, and other somewhat static information elements from the company's host system data warehouse. 2. SAS!/Base--for extracting and standardizing desired data a. The Macro Language Facility in Base SAS! is necessary to handle the numerous parameter substitutions and processing loops inherent to this application b. The Annotate Facility in Base SAS! is used to alter the positioning and spelling of labels for some states, countries, and/or islands c. PROC FORMAT is used to assign telephony country codes to SAS! country codes d. PROC SQL is generally used to summarize and combine data streams which need outputs at a single hierarchy e |

Presentation: In pharmaceutical and epidemiological studies, one important aspect of the characterization of the relationship between an "exposure" (typically some risk factor in epidemiological studies and a drug or therapeutic regime in pharmaceutical trials) and the disease of interest refers to the measurement of the impact of the exposure on the timing of disease. For many chronic diseases, exposures merely advance the disease onset, and some measure conveying this information on the time dimension of premature disease occurrence is needed. Therefore, the concept termed "risk and rate advancement period (RAP)" has been introduced for chronic diseases to describe the time period by which the risk or rate of disease is advanced among exposed subjects. The measures are suited for diseases whose rate monotonically increase with age and for risk factors that accelerate progression to chronic diseases and thereby modify the increase of disease risk with age. The statistical derivation of point and interval estimates for the measures is briefly outlined here, and the computational realization of the method within the SAS software is delineated. |

The Non-Stock Exchange Deals Optimization using Netflow Method |
V. B. Gorsky, V. P. Stepanov |
We would like to present the solution of the following problem: some organization has a number of clients, which have their own portfolios of bonds ( or it can be any type of commodities ). Sometimes they would like to buy, to sell, or to sell one type of bond and to buy another bond on money from the bond sale, or from some client account. The clients can do it through external organizatio(p.e. on Stock Exchange), but the exchange operations between them inside the organization will be more profitable for them. The tasks are 1) to reveal the chains of mutual exchanges between client bids with maximum value of internal bond flow ; 2) to calculate the required external stock exchange operations and the importance of each of them. Each client has its own position in scale of priority. Besides each client has own requisitions on the exchange operation, the price of commodity in sale must be higher then some value and vice versa in buy operations the price must be lower then another value |

Turbo Charging SAS Applications in Solaris Environments: Managing Highly Performing Applications in Large Multi-User Environments |
Maureen E. Chew, Patty Gilchrist |
With the ever increasing need to support large enterprise SAS applications, we investigate and examine several different approaches to managing widespread, diverse and unpredictable workloads. We examine technologies and products which address scalability in the broadest sense of the definition: more data, more users, more urgency. Several strategies discussed include the newly available Solaris Resource Manager; allowing administrators extremely flexible methods for soft partitioning system resources based on project, user and/or application. Coupled with the Solaris Bandwidth Manager, SAS applications which have response time requirements typical of web enabled service and delivery applications could benefit greatly as administrators struggle with variable peak workloads |

Web Enabling A Large Data Warehouse |
Clare Somerville, Colin J. Harris |
The New Zealand Ministry of Social Policy (MSP) has a large, well-established and successful corporate data warehouse. This warehouse first went into production in January 1996. It has been continually enhanced since that time, and now services several government departments across the social sector. The hardware has been upgraded, the data quantity and sources have increased, and more vital information is being provided from the data warehouse. Although the number of users has increased, access had been limited to analysts with specialist SAS ! skills. This paper presents our experience, and the lessons learnt, from Web enabling a large and mature data warehouse: determining the real needs and benefits, undertaking research and appropriate planning, through to implementation. The decision to Web enable the warehouse was motivated by two business needs |

Your Graphs on the Web with SAS/GRAPH Version 8 |
Francesca Pierri |
The new features of SAS/GRAPH and the Output Delivery System provide the possibility of creating interesting graphs on the Web even lacking an extensive knowledge about the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). In particular the new enhancements allow to create drill-down graphs and define a link connecting each clickable area with another output, such as a report or another more detailed graph; moreover there is the chance of organizing the web page into areas and displaying for instance a Table of Contents and a graph in a single frame. This paper shows a few graphs and programs written with the aim of drawing and viewing them on the web. In particular it highlights new Version 8 features for the PROC GMAP, the possibility of creating drill-down graphs, combining output from different procedures and defining custom layouts |
