7 A prototype of Quality Data Warehouse in Steel Industry Camilo De Vecchis,
Maria Murri
The final product quality is one of the fundamental aspects in steel industry. Because of this it became more and more important to prove the product quality, to look for the causes of all quality defects and to discover the relationships between product properties and production process parameters. Further, in order to verify the product quality in terms of 'customer satisfaction', it is important to investigate the relationships between product properties and sold/refused products. To solve these tasks it is on one hand necessary to handle information and data factory in a wide form and on the other hand to have powerful tools to analyse and interpret them. The work describes a Quality Data Warehouse (QDW) prototype, developed using SAS/WAREHOUSE Administrator V8, realised for a steel plant of tinplate production fact table, data warehouse, dimension table, star schema source 5

11 A web interface for portfolio risk optimisation with SAS System Giuseppe Marcon,
Maria Rita Pepe
This article wants to illustrate an ongoing project by Simbologica S.r.l./Up-Tecno group (SIMBOLOGICA) implemented using the SAS System, whose goal is to optimise a client portfolio controlling its risk through the selection of investing funds offered by a single bank. A number of web pages are dynamically created with the intention of including them in the banks web sites currently developed and maintained by SPF SpA (Soluzioni e Prodotti per la Finanza) . Results for the evaluation of portfolios by means of various indicators (e.g. monthly returns, value at risk, Sharpe index) are presented in table formats and through CSF style-like images. A web page allows the selection of optimisation criteria, like the choice to retain funds or discard them, the choice of categories of investments and the maximum level of risk permitted in the resulting portfolio numeric functions, variance, portfolio risk, proc step, standard deviation, available balance, sas risk engine, time series analysis, proc reg source 14

26 BNL's experience in building an internal rating system for domestic corporate customers A. Pellegrini,
G. Parrillo,
G. Porcelli
The original approach of the Basel Committee, in its revision of banks' minimum capital requirements, tended to favour the use of ratings by international rating agencies. This approach would have favoured the Anglo- American banks penalising banks based in countries where the ratings of external agencies have a limited diffusion (i.e. emerging economies or countries, like Italy and Japan, characterised by an economic structure dominated by small enterprises, which have a preference for bank debts rather than other types of financing). Recently, the Basel Committee has changed its position, putting the Internal Rating Systems (IRS) of the banks on par with the products of the rating agencies, on condition that the former were validated by the national control authorities credit risk, mcr source 4

38 Cross-selling of insurance products Flavio Bonifacio,
Oreste Porreca
The information owned by an Insurance Company is frequently appreciated and used for CRM, from target analysis to customer satisfaction. Last year we spoke about the use of this kind of information by a Bank. Now we will speak about its exploitation by the Insurance Company itself. The cross-selling mode points to the identification of customers of new products (for example the Target Product) among clients based on characteristics well known to the company. One of the characteristics being the insurance products already purchased. This study presents two complementary ways of identifying the most potential customers: the first one, which we refer to as the external way, compares two selling channels in order to identify differences in customers due to the selling channel. This kind of analysis uses information related to the clients that RMA acquires by means of another selling organisation. The second way analyses data that Reale Mutua Assicurazioni acquires by means of its own selling network (internal channel) in order to identify which pattern of products already owned is the best predictor for future buying behaviours. proc freq, sample source 6

We are just coming out of a revolution. A revolution carried into effect as quickly as if it seems that the whole scenery of a society was not changed: a deep rebuilt, needed before the same traditional Market impose it. Let's think about all the tools which are today within the reach of everybody; could we propose a "yesterday newspaper"? Well, this is our contribution to the revolution: canalize the information and make it "alive": share all the main sources of analysis (in credit and finance), presenting them to all users in an electronic, drillable, exhaustive and above all continually updated format. Reset of the distances, satisfaction, evolution, freshness, no shock for the users, mould ability: this is our formula to go beyond papers and their well known logistic and cost problems. Our belief in e-warehousing success, the balance between costs and benefits, the need of a fast, safe, efficient and reliable tool have made us choose SAS Web solution once again source 6

69 Enterprise cancer registry Romor Pierantonio,
Vicario Gianni
The purpose of this project was the analysis of the requirements necessary for the realization of an automated system to determine the cancer incidence starting from the data available in the medical information database. The example given refers to the accomplishment of a population cancer registry in Friuli Venezia-Giulia, a region in the north-east of Italy. The starting information base consists of an epidemiological data warehouse, realized with SAS , where both the reference source and their report are kept. The quality controls have been carried out by using interfaces developed in SAS/AF . The results show that, thanks to pre-existent data base, the development of computerized algorithms to determine the incidence, and the realization of computer programs for the assisted resolution of the cases, new opportunities are given to cancer registration at lower cost and more timely than in the past record linkage, data warehouse source 4

76 First Aid for Legacy Data Warehouses - Common Symptoms and their remedies David Porter Data warehousing has been around for long enough to be seen as part of the same problem that it set out to cure. Legacy warehouses are slowing down to walking pace under the weight of years of stored data, front-end screens once state-of-the-art are now being criticised for not being 'windowy' enough. In these days of faster is better, batch driven warehouses are seen as arcane, the future is seen as live warehouses with the database being both transactional and historical. In this short paper I would like to offer a few tips to those nursing legacy systems and who want to 'pep' them up a bit, and hopefully save a few systems from being replaced unnecessarily. data warehouse, data mart source 3
77 Football and data mining: a statistical system for a "real-time" monitoring of players' performance in the European Championships Furio Camillo,
Stefano Sforza
The paper aims to present various statistical models for the monitoring in real time of what happens in a football match. In particular, we discuss an evolution in terms of data-mining of the Digital Soccer System which has been used from some RAI journalists to discuss and to give a commentary on the games of the last European Football Championships. The research, and the experimentation of the used statistical models, have been entirely carried out in SAS environment, beginning from Software specific of "real-time survey" of what happens during the games, and of geo-reference, on the field, of all the noticeable athletic gestures according to previously defined technical codes. We try to show how it has been possible, working within the SAS environment and moving with a "Data-Mining approach" to implement models of synthetic appraisal and monitoring of the performance of a single soccer player during one sport competition like Euro2000 source 6

80 From data warehouse to reports warehouse: a case study Gady Kotler Bank Tefachot, Israel's largest mortgage bank is using SAS for it's entire financial reporting, branch analysis and risk management for many years. SAS v8 has been installed on the bank's UNIX server during 2000 and immediately has created a need for Web reporting in all branches around the country. The Data warehouse team from EIS Ltd. has built a unique solution called SIGMA/Web that maintains a Reports Warehouse. Users can view reports generated periodically using SAS ODS and to send, via a web browser interface, requests for the SAS Unix server to be processed on-line. Each user can publish a SAS report to be viewed by other members under certain security limitations. A SAS published report can be enhanced by up-loading a WORD or EXCEL documents or other web formats. These documents along with the SAS reports, formulates a complete publication that is cataloged under Sigma/Web SAS application stored procedure, ods html, excel source 5

82 From GaAs to Mobile Phones: the Implementation of a Quality Warehouse Paul Burgess This paper describes the experiences of Filtronic Compound Semiconductors LTD in implementing a data-driven yield management system to support the delivery of its RF products fabricated in Gallium Arsenide to customers in the telecommunications sector. Key business requirements were the rapid delivery of working prototypes to prospective customers, followed by a rapid stabilisation of the production process. In spite of the need to utilise manufacturing technology that is out of the mainstream of semiconductor manufacturing, this paper shows how these requirements were successfully supported through the development and deployment of a custom solution built using SAS technology for data warehousing and exploitation. Implementation was achieved in a relatively short time frame and in a cost effective manor, to successfully achieve the initial business requirements data warehouse, proc freq source 6
83 From Oracle to SAS: converting a large data warehouse Clare Somerville In January 1996, the New Zealand Ministry of Social Policy implemented its data warehouse. The data was stored in Oracle; SAS was used for all data manipulation, cleansing, verification, analysis and reporting, and for updating the Oracle database. Since that time, the warehouse has grown. There are now multiple data sources, with more users from more government departments. Two Oracle databases are in production, and they total around 500 GB in size. In this environment there are many features of Oracle that we don't use; and a couple of features that we do: views to set security levels, and the ability to update and query at the same time. But there are serious drawbacks to the use of Oracle - like query performance times that are up to ten times slower than SAS. This paper covers some of the issues encountered in converting a large Oracle based data warehouse into SAS dataset, proc step, proc sql, view, oracle, attrib statement, key, modify statement source 8
84 Fuzzy key linkage: robust methods for real databases Sigurd W. Hermansen Results of data mining depend heavily on the quality of linkage keys within a search dataset and within its database target. Linkage failures due to errors or variations in linkage keys have few symptoms, and can hide or distort what data have to tell us. More robust methods have promise as remedies, but require careful planning and understanding of specialized technologies. A tour of fuzzy linkage issues and robust linkage methods precedes a review of the results of a recent linkage project. Sample SAS programs include tools and tips ranging from SOUNDEX() and SPEDIS() functions to hash indexing macroprograms. proc sql, dataset, key, record linkage, %if-%then-%else, proc step, macro variable, data cleaning, parallel processing, macro definition, proc freq source 13

88 Group Services Portal Project Web Warehousing - Suppliers Angela Rinaldi The Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni (Group of Construction Cooperatives) is one of the primary groups in the national construction sector. There are more than 240 associated cooperatives who operate in the fields of construction, transport, services, industry, and construction materials. They include large, nation-wide cooperatives, and small and medium sized cooperatives, and give an overall occupation to more than 20,000 operators, for an annual turnover of more than 6,000 billion lira. This portal represents the tool prepared by the CCC to promote, through the Web, the exchange of information and the comparison of opportunities with other operators in the field. The Web project is addressed in general to the construction field, from Public Bodies to Contracting Stations, from the Banking System to the Insurance System, from design companies to the individual practitioners, from the representative structures of the construction companies to the individual companies which can, in turn, become partners or potential competitors of the Group itself. source 8

101 Improvements Made with Output Delivery System in Data Processing Maja Ledic Blazevic Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CBS) prepares and carries out majority of statistical surveys in Republic of Croatia, which are described in the 'Act on the National Statistics'. This paper will discuss some experiences and improvements made with SAS in processing, analysis and publishing of statistical data in some surveys. Methodologies used for statistical surveys in CBS are based on such principles and standards that ensure comparability of statistical indicators with other countries. For some of surveys CBS took over methodology of EUROSTAT. Two of them that have significant importance are Labour Force Survey and Household Budget Survey. Main goal for those two surveys was to prepare publications with results comparable to other European countries. SAS was chosen as most suitable tool to reach that goal. This paper will not discuss any aspect of methodologies for those surveys and it will focus only to usage of SAS. proc tabulate, proc step, output delivery system, excel, dataset, sample source 5

120 Macro encapsulation add-in tool for SAS/Warehouse Administrator Anders Holte The tool has four main functional areas: Simple job flow control, dynamic naming of input and output tables and variable names, simple source browser / editor, and a utility class. An add-in code generator builds the job stream a related add-in defines necessary extended attributes and features. Separate job steps or table load steps, user written or WA generated, are all covered by the tool. Fetures: Simple job flow control is obtained by putting some intelligence before and after the job step in the job stream. The job step should run depending on the success of another step. Return codes for job steps may be stored in a log data set for job control. Dynamic naming of tables and variables is done by inserting macro variables containing the names retrieved from the metadata into the job stream macro variable, sysrc, exception handling, macro definition source 17

134 Overcoming Cross-Platform Issures using SAS/Connect and Java John M. LaBore,
Michael J. Pell,
Randy Curnutt
Integrating multiple hardware/software technologies is a problem common in large organizations. End users often must be technically savvy to accomplish tasks requiring transactions on more than one platform. For example, statisticians may spend a great deal of time with 'systems programming', when they should be doing what they were hired to do: analysis and experimental design. We explore different methods using SAS/CONNECT and Java to simplify day-to-day tasks of end users. Java enables business applications and SAS/CONNECT can easily connect disparate systems to one another. One such solution is a web- based Java applet that provides a point and click user interface for seamlessly transferring SAS or non-SAS data from one platform to another. Java applets can dynamically generate SAS/CONNECT programs to run on the most appropriate platform (OS/390, UNIX, NT, PC, Linux, etc) dataset, proc step, delimited file, raw data, txt, macro definition, excel source 5

144 Querying Star and Snowflake Schemas in SAS Bart Heinsius Star schemas, and sometimes snowflake schemas, are often used in Data Warehouses as the storage structure for dimensional data that is to be queried efficiently. In Data Warehouses built using SAS Software, star and snowflake schemas can also be implemented. Star and snowflake schemas in SAS can be queried using SAS SQL or the SAS DATA STEP. Tests have shown that using the DATA STEP can result in significant performance gains over SQL. This paper will discuss the use of star and snowflake schemas in SAS and will look into the performance issues that arise. Then, a number of techniques are discussed that address these issues. They involve bitmap indexes and DATA STEP code generation from dedicated metadata. Then, the Star Class is introduced, which implements these techniques. This paper should be of interest to Data Warehouse architects and builders and to OLAP application builders working with SAS Data Warehouses used for dimensional querying proc sql, fact table, star schema, sample, snowflake schema, dimension table, proc step, sas base, index, foreign key, lookup, bitmap source 5

Two parts will be discussed. The first part describes features already available in the SAS System. The second part introduces an educational application. This application is a visual demonstration of elementary statistical notion. Topics such as the influence of changing the parameters of a distribution on the shape of the distribution and the variability of a point estimator are discussed. The demonstration is developed on a PC (Windows) using Base SAS , SAS/GRAPH , SAS/INSIGHT and SAS/AF. SAS Version 8.1 SAS code will be shown. The presentation is aimed at people who are interested or involved in teaching statistics sample, binomial distribution, normal distribution, probability functions, regression analysis source 10
185 Test On Line: reusing SAS code in WEB applications Carlo Ramella The Proway System is a powerful complete system for Process and Testing Data Analysis in IC industry environment. The system, based on a classical client-server architecture, is designed to access several databases at the same time, placed in different sites all around the world, moving and computing very large sets of data. A complete set of statistical analysis (tools) have been written using SAS procedures (histogram, box plots, scatter plots, bar charts, statistical reporting, and so on). The increasing number of users (more than 3000, on four continents), with different levels of skill in different application areas, led to design a new generation of tools dedicated to fast, light and very specific analysis. The new architecture includes the classic client-server tools for "heavy" analysis (SAS datasets of 1 Gigabyte are not so unusual in these cases) and a new set of WEB tools for quick reporting connection string, proc sql source 7

Mario Rapone
The aim of this paper is to outline solutions related to access, management, analysis and presentation of data coming from a consistent data base in the development of a traffic emission information system carried on within the ATENA Project. This is a large car fleet test started in the 1999 in the urban area of Naples, realized in cooperation between FIAT Research Center, Naples City Hall, ELASIS, the University "Federico II" and the Istituto Motori of National Research Council of Italy. The scope of this project is to create a decision support system for urban traffic management based on a traffic monitoring system. The information acquired on the road by cars is analyzed to determine typical driving behavior related to a combination of traffic conditions and road characteristics. This presentation shows the data warehousing process in the development of the Traffic Information System.
